A recent Gallup survey found fewer employees today can clearly articulate their roles and responsibilities compared to before the pandemic. Major workplace changes like remote work transitions have muddled job expectations. Unclear roles lead to lower engagement and productivity.
Among fully remote staff, the share who understand workplace expectations dropped from 60% in 2020 to 47% in 2023. For hybrid workers it fell from 55% to 41%. Managers must set clear group expectations and accountability measures. More frequent recognition and feedback also helps.
With goals constantly shifting, anxiety persists despite conversations. So managers should provide real-time confirmation when teams are on track. The turbulence of recent years has obscured workplace roles. But renewed focus on transparency and communication can help regain lost clarity.
